The A Shot For Life Home Run Derby is the baseball and softball counterpart to the ASFL Challenge. It is a talent based event that features the 16 best boys and the 16 best girls in Massachusetts. Debuted in 2020, the expansion into other sports was always on the table for ASFL. When the Coronavirus Pandemic rampaged through the United States in 2020, ASFL found itself in a situation where all of our basketball events were indefinitely postponed. We had to pivot to something that we knew could be successful and was also sufficiently socially distanced.
The scouting process of the inaugural ASFL Home Run Derby immediately saw many of the state’s top players vying to get selected. While the fact that 14 of our 16 boys held Division 1 scholarship offers meant that our field would live up to its “talent based” billing, the most important note is that our brand held significant weight in a market that we had yet to become a part of. The success of the ASFL Home Run Derby lead us to look into what other sports may be a good next step to continue to involve more athletes in Massachusetts and New England.
The ASFL Home Run Derby is the first step in what will ultimately become a robust baseball and softball department. Local town home run derbies for little leagues, a marathon slow pitch softball game for adults, and designated “ASFL Games” for high schools will come together to create a circuit of ASFL Baseball and Softball events.
